Job Description

Wellness Education Specialist I-F/C

This open competitive advertisement is for a Career Service position located at Cross City Correctional Institution in the Education Department. Our mission in the Education Department is to provide inmates' well-being and social recovery through engaging wellness and recreational programs. We ensure a safe, supportive environment by collaborating with staff and carefully supervising activities. By assessing needs and interests, we create meaningful opportunities for personal growth and community connection.

Job Duties:

  • Plans, runs, and oversees wellness education and recreational programs for inmates, including classroom activities and organized events.
  • Supervises inmates during activities and ensures security coordination with medical and security staff.
  • Assesses inmate participation and interests, using this information to set goals and plan programs that support their social recovery.
  • Maintains and tracks wellness equipment and supplies through regular monthly and quarterly inventories.
  • Writes reports on inmate behavior when needed and organizes special events, including visits from outside groups for cultural and recreational activities.

Requirements:

  • A high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • One year of professional experience in conducting recreational activities or health/wellness. Correctional experience can substitute for one year of the required work experience.
  • Support of knowledge, skills, and abilities should be demonstrated on the application, in the education, in the work experience, in the work sample, in the interview and/or during reference checks.

Additional Information:

  • The Florida Department of Corrections requires all job applicants and volunteers to pass a Level 2 background check as per Chapter 435, Florida Statutes. This check must be completed before they can start working or volunteering.
