Job Description

Join our team at Golden Valley Electric Association as a full-time Lab Technician at our power plants in Healy, Alaska!

This position offers the opportunity to support plant operations through a combination of water treatment system operation, equipment maintenance, and analytical testing . While laboratory analysis is part of the role, this position is primarily focused on hands-on operation and maintenance of water, wastewater, boiler, and cooling systems in an industrial power plant environment .

As a key member of our operations team, you will work directly with treatment equipment, chemical systems, and plant processes to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient power generation. This is an ideal role for individuals who enjoy mechanical systems, fieldwork, and process operations , not just laboratory testing.

This position offers competitive pay ranging from $51.54 (Tech 1) to $60.63 (Tech 2) per IBEW Agreement.

You will have benefits such as Retirement/401K, Health Insurance, Life Insurance, Short- and Long-Term Disability, Paid Leave, Flexible Spending, and Wellness Benefits. Join us in Healy, Alaska and make a real difference in the electric cooperative industry!

Hello, we're Golden Valley Electric Association

GVEA is an electric cooperative that maintains 3,292 miles of transmission and distribution lines, 40 substations, and 9 generating facilities. Our system is interconnected with Fort Wainwright, Eielson AFB, Fort Greely, the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, and all electric utilities in the Alaska Railbelt, which extends from Homer to Fairbanks. Powering the Interior of Alaska, GVEA contributes to the economic, environmental, and social viability of our communities.

Your role as a Lab Technician

As a Lab Technician at Golden Valley Electric Association, you will play a critical role in operating and maintaining plant water and wastewater treatment systems while supporting analytical testing needs. You will be actively involved in managing boiler water chemistry, operating groundwater wells, and overseeing treatment equipment, including reverse osmosis systems, demineralizers, filters, clarifiers, and chemical feed systems.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include monitoring and adjusting treatment processes, maintaining pumps, valves, and piping systems, performing minor repairs, and supporting preventative and corrective maintenance activities. You will also conduct routine sampling and analysis (pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, etc.) to ensure system performance and compliance.

This role requires regular interaction with plant systems and equipment, including chemical handling, equipment installation, troubleshooting, and process optimization. You will work closely with operations teams to resolve issues, improve system performance, and ensure compliance with environmental and safety standards.

This is not a bench-lab role; success in this position requires mechanical aptitude, hands-on system operation, and comfort working in an industrial plant environment.

Does this sound like you?

To excel as a Laboratory Technician at Golden Valley Electric Association, candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. In addition, a minimum of three years' experience as a Laboratory Technician in an industrial facility is required to succeed in this role. Proficiency in using various software and tools related to laboratory operations is essential for conducting sampling and analysis and generating reports. Attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and the ability to work effectively within a team are crucial to ensuring accurate data collection and regulatory compliance.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to safety, innovation, and mission focus, with a proactive approach to problem-solving and a dedication to maintaining high standards in plant operations.

Knowledge and skills required for the position are:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum three years’ experience as a Laboratory Technician in an industrial facility.
WILL YOU JOIN our team?

If you think this job is a fit for what you are looking for, great! We're excited to meet you!
