Job Summary:

The Medical Billing Specialist is responsible for managing the billing and coding process for our medical practice. This role involves ensuring accurate billing for medical services, processing insurance claims, and handling patient accounts. The Medical Billing Specialist works closely with healthcare providers, insurance companies, and patients to ensure timely and accurate reimbursement.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Billing and Coding:

    • Accurately code medical procedures and diagnoses using ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes.
    • Prepare and submit insurance claims for medical services provided, ensuring compliance with insurance requirements.
    • Review and correct any errors or discrepancies in billing codes and claims.
  2. Insurance Claims Processing:

    • Verify patient insurance coverage and benefits before services are provided.
    • Follow up on denied or rejected claims, working with insurance companies to resolve issues and obtain payment.
    • Appeal denied claims and address any billing disputes with insurance carriers.
  3. Patient Accounts Management:

    • Manage patient billing accounts, including processing payments, issuing refunds, and setting up payment plans.
    • Address and resolve patient billing inquiries, concerns, and discrepancies.
    • Ensure accurate and timely posting of payments and adjustments to patient accounts.
  4. Documentation and Record Keeping:

    • Maintain organized and accurate records of all billing transactions, insurance claims, and patient interactions.
    • Ensure confidentiality and security of patient information in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
  5. Reporting and Reconciliation:

    • Generate and review billing reports to monitor accounts receivable and identify any outstanding balances or issues.
    • Reconcile billing statements and resolve discrepancies between patient accounts and insurance payments.
  6. Compliance and Best Practices:

    • Stay updated on industry regulations, coding guidelines, and insurance policies to ensure compliance.
    • Implement and follow best practices for medical billing and coding to enhance accuracy and efficiency.
  7. Communication and Coordination:

    • Collaborate with healthcare providers and administrative staff to ensure accurate documentation and coding of medical services.
    • Communicate effectively with insurance companies, patients, and other stakeholders to address and resolve billing-related issues.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in medical billing, health information management, or related field preferred.
  • Certification in medical billing and coding (e.g., CPC, CCS, or CBCS) is highly desirable.
  • Proven experience as a Medical Billing Specialist or in a similar role within a healthcare setting.
  • Strong knowledge of medical billing procedures, coding systems, and insurance claims processing.
  • Proficiency in medical billing software and electronic health records (EHR) systems.
  • Excellent attention to detail, analytical skills, and organizational abilities.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive patient information with confidentiality.
